Heartfelt thanks
Heartfelt thanks to the surfer Pete Smith who was surfing at Tathra on Sunday and pulled our son from the water after he was dumped in the sand and lost his board, along with Megan and all the Tathra lifeguards on patrol who then rescued him and cared for him till the ambulance arrived.

My wife and I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all involved, including the care provided from the hospital staff and ambos, and our son’s friends who were watching him from the top of the rocks and ran to get help.
Thankfully our son sustained no serious injuries.
Thank you all.

Thanks for fluoride
Thank heavens the council has shown the intestinal fortitude to go with reputable science rather than bend to the unmitigated loony drivel peddled by the opponents of fluoridating our water supply. Congratulations BVSC.

Arguments have holes
Council’s ‘yes’ to fluoridisation is a blow to the democratic process; a bad decision built on dodgy assumptions.
Councillors, unlike Sydney, do not have individual wards and are elected by all eligible voters in the shire. Councillor Tapscott’s statement that 77 per cent of her residents want it means that 77 per cent of the Bega Valley Shire told her they want it. I don’t think so.
Cr Bain’s statement about non-fluoridated water being a cause of her child’s tooth decay also has a few holes in it. Till I moved here I lived in Sydney and drank fluoridated water for 68 years and guess what, I have the worse teeth imaginable.
The reason, I came from a disadvantaged background and could not afford decent dental care. Currently as a pensioner I may be able to get some free dental care if I don’t die on the waiting list .
As they say you are what you eat, and drink for that matter. We are buried in sugar-laden food these days and it’s that that is ruining our teeth, not non-fluoridated water.
It would also appear some councillors have difficulties in dealing with those against their decisions and everyone has a right to their opinion.
Thank you to the two councillors who voted against fluoride, you are the only ones listening to the majority.
If Cr Seckold wants to keep helping the disadvantaged she needs to lobby government for free dental care for those who can’t afford a trip to the dentist.

Environmental vandalism
It is many years since we moved to Bega. We found it a nice town with friendly people.
It had waterways and lovely green areas of playing fields and parks which were, and still are, kept in excellent condition by the great team of people who drive the mowers.
Unfortunately, all their good work is being destroyed. It seems as soon as they tidy up a messy area of overgrowth along comes a person in gum boots, coloured shirt and floppy hat, driving an anonymous truck.
Suddenly we are presented with hundreds of metres of pegged down ghastly grey felt. Into this go regimented rows of spike weeds followed by the introduction of literally hundreds of ugly green no-biodegradable plastic cartons.
To cap it all off, anything remotely resembling green growth is liberally sprayed with toxic weed killer.
This is pure environmental vandalism, not to mention visual pollution.
Surely the council has some control over this activity, or is all green space destined to be buried in this rubbish? This is creating what in a few years’ time will be a huge and expensive clean-up job.
No doubt the clearing up will fall to the lot of our hard working mowing team.
