President of the FSC branch Colin Clarke estimated almost $7,000 would be donated to the charities coffers, which will be used to support people in the local rugby league community.
Mr Clarke said he and the committee were extremely grateful for the ongoing support of Con Zurcas of Eden Motor Group, who have been the major sponsor of the event for four years and are still working at growing the golf day.
He also thanked the Eden Fishermen’s Club, Radio 2EC and a smattering of other local businesses who sponsored nearest the pins, tees and other prizes for the day.
Organisers welcomed 97 starters to the Eden golf course, including a smattering of new teams from Bomabala and the Glover brothers from across NSW, particularly former Paramatta star Neville Glover, who served as auctioneer following play.
“There is nothing like running an event and seeing just how strong the rugby league community is, that level of support is unreal,” Mr Clarke said.
“The state manager Bruce Walker was here and there are five of the Glover boys who come from as far as Tamworth.”
Tipping the winners’ card were the team led by Adam Inwood and Leanne Munt with Mr Clarke saying they had an “exceptional team” of golfers to take the crown.
Meanwhile, the Steve Kennedy memorial award for the silliest player went to Greg Clark.
“He hit his ball in the creek into a pipe and then went crawling in there – where there could be snakes or all sorts – all for a $4.50 ball,” Mr Clarke said with a laugh.
The branch president spoke on the day about the role in combating the “black dog” of depression and how physical injury can lead to isolation or loneliness and the golf and bowls days were as much about socialising and breaking stigma around mental health.
“If anyone feels down, please get in touch and we’ll have someone around to help you.”
The group also help where they can financially towards medical costs, or treatments as well as using national power to push for support for injured players and people across the league community.
It’s something Mr Clarke and the committee are extremely passionate about and said they were grateful for support received during the fundraiser days.
A bowls day is being organised with a date to be announced, while the next golf day will be held on November 25 – and play on the last Sunday in November moving forward.
