Christmas shoppers along Carp Street in Bega have delighted at the sound of carols performed by the brass band, which was originally formed way back in 1899.
On December 12, 20 and 21, the group performed for local businesses who had made a $50 donation to the Bega District Band.
Treasurer and euphonium player David Moore said 31 businesses has sponsored the band, providing crucial funds for keeping their music alive.
“We can’t thank them enough, it doesn’t only keep us going, it helps us to grow too,” he said.
When Mr Moore joined the band in 2011, its future was in question.
“Back then there was only one lady in the band, and no young ones at all,” he said.
“Now we’ve got four women, three kids and have virtually doubled in size.”
As well as playing in the street of Bega, the band has spread their Christmas cheer to the carols event at Sapphire Coast Anglican College on December 1 and in Bermagui on December 15.
On Monday, December 18, the band paid a visit to the South East Regional Hospital to entertain patients, visitors and staff.
They played in the upstairs corridor of the hospital, so although not all of the patients could watch the performance, the sound reverberated throughout the ward.
Mr Moore said the end of the year was the biggest fundraising period for the band as they collected donations at each performance.
The Bega District band rehearses every Monday at 7pm at their band room in Canning Street and open their door to new members.
