The University of Wollongong Bega campus celebrated its graduating cohort of 2017 with a ceremony on Friday, December 8.

The students, their families, friends, lecturers and campus staff gathered in the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre for the ceremony

The 47 graduands from all over the Bega Valley were presented to the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Inclusion and Outreach) Professor Paul Chandler.

In 2008, Professor Chandler was awarded as one of Australia's 10 most pre-eminent researchers. In 2009, he was appointed by the federal government to the Indigenous Higher Education Advisory Council. He is the executive director of Early Start, the $44million initiative focused on creating educational programs, experiences and networks that enrich the way we understand and interact with children, families and communities.

Degrees conferred at the graduation celebration included the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts Honours, Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Teaching Primary and Secondary.

Congratulatory addresses were given by Mayor Kristy McBain and Andrew Constance MP, while Bachelor of Commerce graduate Alison Vandenbergh gave the vote of thanks.

Young local classical pianist Luca Ziino entertained the audience with beautiful musical interludes as well as performing the processional fanfares.

The University of Wollongong’s Bega campus was opened in the year 2000 and more than 450 local people have since graduated from degrees offered by the university in that time.
