In a letter to parents and students last week, The Friends’ School said a “former student had informed the school they had been sexually abused by a former senior member of staff”.
Principal of the independent North Hobart school Nelson File said the staff member was no longer employed.
“Naturally I am shocked and horrified by an allegation of this nature,” he wrote.
“The school abhors all abuse, especially of children.”
It is unknown when the abuse is alleged to have taken place.
Mr Nelson said the school had contacted Tasmania Police and an independent investigation was underway.
