When the three former shires came together in May, 2016 there was the opportunity to make real progress in our towns and villages.
As a stronger council, we had greater capacity to streamline resources, apply for state and federal government funding, and create a regionally strong identity.
I’ve spent about nine years in local government, and I truly believe it’s the one form of government that can really make a difference.
As mayor of the former Cooma-Monaro Shire Council (CMSC), I’ve seen this region grow and I hope the incoming council can build upon what’s been achieved.
Snowy Monaro Regional Council has delivered many important community projects and it’s satisfying to see all our towns and villages benefiting.
This Council followed on the work started by the previous CMSC and delivered a reliable water source for Nimmitabel. The Lake Wallace Dam project ended years of water restrictions for Nimmitabel residents.
One of the proudest achievements of this Council has been improving the water quality in Bombala. Residents are able to access a cleaner, more drinkable water supply.
Council has also allocated $3.5 million towards the Bombala Sewage Treatment Plant. This is a $7million project that has received federal government funding.
In Jindabyne there is significant work underway to create a true town centre. Upgrading Snowy River Avenue will allow locals and tourists greater access to the entire CBD. This will assist in boosting the local economy.
While many towns are experiencing a decline in their saleyards, Cooma has bucked this trend.
Improvements have been made to the multi-purpose site, as well as upgrading the truck wash facilities at the saleyards.
These changes will lead to greater use of the saleyards, and I envisage the improvements will pay for themselves in the next five years.
This Saturday, September 9, is the election for Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
Please remember to vote, and vote carefully for those candidates who will help our region continue to grow.
