I take the liberty to assume there will be a financial penalty to the residents for this. If this is the case, will there also be exemption for those of us who already have and use compose bins and chooks for all our food scraps, and therefore will have no need for the kitchen caddie and collection, which I believe will be a weekly collection?

Honesty appreciated
Thank you to the person who found my debit card in Carp St and handed it into the newsagent. And thanks to the Ritchies who got it safely back to me. Your honesty is really appreciated.

Dated views dangerous
When Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius in 1896 first warned the world that burning fossil fuels would increase carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and heat the planet, he was disbelieved by other scientists and mocked by the public.
So recent comments by former prime ministers John Howard (“I have become increasingly more of a sceptic on climate change”) and Tony Abbott (“the Green left’s theology of climate change”) would not have been out of place then – in 1896.
So on what are our former prime ministers relying with these views? Certainly not the teaching of the churches.
In 2014 the Anglican Church’s general synod called on the government “to respect and act upon relevant independent evidence-based scientific advice” on climate change.
And in 2015 the Pope in his encyclical on the environment - Laudato Si’ - said “a number of scientific studies indicate that most global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases …released mainly as a result of human activity”.
So, if not science and if not religion then what? Intuition? Radio commentators? The tiny minority of dissenting scientists?
Mr Howard and Mr Abbott are highly respected by their conservative followers, many of whom no doubt follow their lead on issues such as climate change. Surely it's not too much to ask, for the sake of our (and their) children and grandchildren, that they follow the pleading of their religious leaders and actually read what the scientists say?
If they do then maybe we could become like the UK where climate change is not a political issue. In 2015 the three major UK parties issued a joint statement starting off with the words “Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing the world today. It is not just a threat to the environment, but also to our national and global security, to poverty eradication and economic prosperity.”
If only!

Thanks for caring
Thanks to caring Coles customers in Bega, more children, young people and families facing cancer are now receiving essential support.
Coles generously contributes five cents from the sale of every loaf of Coles Smart Buy, Coles Brand and Coles High Top bread directly to Redkite to support children with cancer and their families. Because of customers’ support and Coles’ donation an impressive $15 million from bread sales has now been raised so families can access Redkite’s essential financial, emotional and educational support.
Our deepest thanks go to the local community and to the passionate Coles team who have helped to achieve this $15 million milestone. With no government funding, Redkite relies on the generosity of partners like Coles and communities across Australia to provide essential help to families from hospital to home. You are our champions of community cancer care across Bega.
