The scoring was opened with Candelo-Bemboka taking first points to gain an early lead 6-0. However it wasn’t to be long until Bombala hit back with a try of their own with Andrew Platts scoring under the posts and with Aaron Stewart’s successful conversion Bombala were right back in it with a 6 all ball game.
Unfortunately this was to be the last time Bombala scored for the day with a couple of disallowed tries and some good Candelo-Bemboka defence. Leigh Radford and Slade Newton were strong for the Heelers relentless in both attack and defence, but at the conclusion of the game it was the Candelo-Bemboka United Panthers running away with the win 42-6. Players Player and three points went to Leigh Radford, 2 points went to Slade Newton and 1 point to Andrew Platts.
Girls
The Bombala High Heelers were in for a tough weekend of football playing two games in two days. The first game was on Saturday 20th May in Candelo against the Candelo-Bemboka United Pink Panthers. The scoring was opened early in the game with Caitlin Johnson of CBU taking an opportunity to slip through the line and score under the posts, with the conversion unsuccessful the score was 4-0 in CBU’s favour. The next 10 minutes proved a challenge for the High Heelers, however in the 11th minute Kayley Keavey eluded players to run away and score under the posts and open the High Heelers scoring for the day. Keiarna Rodwell’s successful conversion saw Bombala take the lead 6-4. Amy Stone would be next to score, running hard onto the ball to split CBU’s defence and run the length of the field to score under the posts. With another successful conversion to Keiarna Rodwell Bombala were now 12-4 in front. Two minutes later a precision ball from Abbey Kimber to a steaming Natasha Stewart saw another runaway try with Tash scoring under the posts and with Keiarna’s conversion the High Heelers went into half time 18-4 in front.
After the half time break both teams came out firing ready for an intense second half of football. Some great running from Kristy Nichols and Georgia Jones gained good metres for the high heelers while Abbey Kimber and Trina Brownlie were solid in defence keeping CBU at bay. It was in the 36th minute of the game that Amy Stone would evade players to runaway and score another great try under the posts taking Bombala to 22-4. The very next set of six saw Georgie Clarke break the line getting tagged just short of the try line. A quick thinking Kristy Nichols saw an opportunity on the right side and threw a great ball to put Taya Evans over for a good try out wide and with the conversion unsuccessful Bombala were 26-4 in front. Five minutes later would see Natasha Stewart score a great try and with Keiarna’s successful conversion the high heelers were up 32-4 with 5 minutes left to play. The last try of the game came in the last 2 minutes when Emma Sullivan passed a great ball staying in support to receive the ball back and score under the posts rounding out the game 36-4 in Bombala’s favour. The second of the High Heelers games was played in Narooma on Sunday, May 21 against the Narooma She-Devils. With the heat blaring down, it was going to be a tough encounter for the mountain girls. The game started well for the Heelers with some set plays gaining good field position. Keiarna Rodwell opened the scoring for the high Heelers with some great footwork to score and give Bombala the lead 4-0. Not long after Natasha Stewart ran onto the ball to runaway and score the girls second try of the game taking them 8-0 in front. Great defence from Gen Albert and Kristy Nichols kept Narooma from gaining ground, and on the back of this the next points were scored for Bombala through Keiarna Rodwell and with her conversion this took the girls into the half time break 14-0 in front.
After half time, play went back and forth between the two teams and it wasn’t until the 47th minute that Natasha Stewart bagged her second try for the day running away to score under the posts. Keiarna converted taking the High Heelers to 20-0 in front with minutes to play. A quick play from the Narooma hooker saw her scoot down the sideline to score out wide and round out the scoring for the day, the final score reading 20-4.
