That’s how Bega firefighter Clinton Towill described his experience of the recent Fire Fighter’s Climb for Motor Neurone Disease.
Almost 450 Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters raced up the 98 floors of Sydney Tower on October 23 wearing their full turnout kit – around 20kg worth.
“About the 20th floor, everything started to burn and I thought, this isn’t going to be fun,” Mr Towill said.
“I even did five floors backwards to give different muscles a go.”
It took Mr Towill 25 miniutes and 40 seconds to complete the climb up 1504 steps.
“There was muscle pain, breathing pain, mental pain – it was the worst 25 minutes of my life.”
However, stepping out at the tower’s top “made it all worthwhile”.
“The minute I walked out at the top there was a feeling of euphoria, seeing the Sydney skyline, the Harbour Bridge,” Mr Towill said.

The tower climb was in aid of MND research at Macquarie University. The overall goal of $500,000 has been reached but fundraising is ongoing.
