Last weeks Golden Oldie was of the Bombala Orchestra taken in 1916. The musicians were Alfred Champion (cornet), middle unknown, Robert Elliott (clarinet), left unknown, Fred Smith (piano), Arthur Bowtell (violin) and Prosper Watson (cello).
There is an article about Bombala Orchestra in the Bombala Times on Friday, August 6, 1915, page 3. The article says the Bombala Orchestra played a concert. It mentions the names of the members and says they played well – “An outstanding show for all”.
Three members of the orchestra enlisted in the army in 1916. Sadly Prosper Watson went to war and was killed in action in France on May 9, 1918. He had the rank of Private in the 55 Infantry Battalion.
