McBain said he was pleased with the win, but the Sea Eagles weren’t quite on the ball as usual, especially after suffering some injuries.
“Tom Marshman broke his finger and co-captain Luke Taylor rolled his ankle,” McBain said.
“We ended up with really just one on the bench and that hurt us rotation-wise.
“But I don’t think we played our best footy and it was just a bit weird out there.”
The Lions started strongly before the Sea Eagles reeled them back and piled on points to claim a big win 21-18-144 to 5-8-38.
Tensions flared during the match and boiled over in the second quarter with an on-field scuffle attracting the ire of Narooma supporters.
McBain said he hadn’t heard of any players or officials on report, but the situation looked worse than it was.
“It looked worse than it really was because people and supporters came off the bench on to the field, but everyone calmed down afterwards and we got back to footy,” he said.
Troy O’Loghlin led the scoring for the hosts, kicking five majors alongside Adam Blacka who also put his boot to five.
Will Dickinson and Louis Coulton were also well in the contest to score three majors each, while Scott Hay kicked a single from well outside the 50.
McBain said he wanted to look towards the pointy end of the season, but was facing issues with possible long periods without play.
The Sea Eagles could face four consecutive byes and if they finish second, another three during the finals.
"Given those conditions it’s pretty hard to stay match fit and I am a bit disappointed with the draw to be honest,” he said.
The women’s team was even more dominant than the seniors, letting slip just one behind to win 11-15-81 to 0-1-1.Tyjana Thelan was again a standout with five goals, while Tarni Evans and Casey Matthews both posted two majors. Crystal Vas was solid in the front lines, eluding her player repeatedly to run in open space.
Bega-Tathra’s backline had little work to do for much of the game on the back of an exceptional midfield performance from the team.
Chloe Pellow and Poppy Beruldsen were exceptional in contested plays and clearing out the ball through the middle for the Eagles to win.
