On Saturday, May 21, Writers of the Far South Coast will welcome local author Gabrielle Stroud to present an afternoon workshop from 1pm-4pm, at Club Sapphire, Merimbula on exactly that: "How to Show". How do we show a story? What can we do to reveal our stories? And how do we identify the “telling” in our stories?
The workshop aims to lift your writing from ordinary telling to more artful unveiling and will include activities that help you prepare your writing as well as strategies to detect “the telling” within our stories.
A careful deconstruction of a quality short story will also be included so you can learn from other writers and develop skills of reading like a writer.
Gabrielle's workshop, subsidised by the Mumbulla Foundation, will cost $5 for WFSC members, $10 for non-members. In the mornings, the club holds free Manuscript Clinics, 10am-12pm.
To submit an extract or complete short story, poem or play for the upcoming clinic, please email writersofthefarsouthcoast@gmail.com.

Palliative Care
The special week at this time of year is Palliative Care Week. What does palliative mean in this context?
It means caring for someone with a life-limiting illness through medical means, spiritual means, and addressing physical and mental discomfort.
It is the language of holistic care, very important at this final part of life.
This year Palliative Care Australia is emphasising that people with chronic diseases have equal right to access this care as well as those perhaps nearer to death.
The Bega Valley Hospice (palliative) Group has organised display of information related to this in conjunction with our Council libraries.
Please feel free to pick up material at your closest library, that can help you organise your Advanced Care Directive, to understand what happens at time of death, how to organise a funeral and more.
This is all important so that at the time of death of a loved one, we can more easily process our loss.
On Thursday, May 26, there is another community event. The local health service has organised two free Grief and Loss workshops to be held at the new Bega Civic Centre. The times are 1.20pm-3.30pm, and 6pm-8pm.
These come highly recommended, and include understanding the difference between “healthy” grieving and “unhealthy” grieving and supporting ourselves and others who have experienced loss.
Registration is required. Please ring 6124 9825, The Canberra Grief Centre.
