The clock tower on the corner of Gipps and Carp St – itself a memorial to Dr Evershed – is due to be deconstructed and rebuilt elsewhere in town.
The most obvious location is being touted as Littleton Gardens, with the council gauging community input at today’s SCPA Market.
However, with the intersection soon to be available, and concrete footings already in place, some in the community have a lovely idea to commemorate the clock tower.
“In keeping with the links between the town’s heritage and Littleton Gardens, we thought it wonderfully appropriate to plant a large eucalypt on the site of the old clock tower,” one of the memorial organisers said.
“In time it will grow to provide some lovely shade across that part of town and we believe the roots won’t cause too much disturbance to the roadways as there are apparently old war-time tunnels running underneath.
“And what better day to announce our plan than April 1!” they added, grinning.
