According to Weatherzone, the night’s rains were the highest in 19 years of records for a day in January, with 98.4mm falling on the town by 9am on Sunday morning.
However, it should be noted rainfall records between January 3-10 this year were unavailable, which was during another of the times the Bega Valley was hit by heavy rainfall and floods.
Saturday night’s rainfall also created its share of chaos, with sewer spills reported at the Pambula Rivermouth and Lake Curalo in Eden while Bega’s East St, Poplar Av, Bridge St and Nullica Shortcut Rd as well as Buckajo Rd were closed for a time.
During the storm there was a stunning display of lightning and thunder over the Bega Valley.
The second-highest rainfall for the month Weatherzone has recorded is 82mm on January 28, 1999.
