An open letter to the Bega Valley Shire Council and SCPA South East Producers president John Champagne.
I write regarding a recently published article in the Bega District News (4/8).
The title of the article is “Bega farmers market applies for weekly permit” regarding the Bega Farmers market and again this topic was raised on this morning’s (5/8) local radio station.
I would like to put forward an idea for consideration by the Bega Valley Council.
I am sure that this idea has been considered previously.
However, if not, then I would like to suggest that the markets move to Church St Bega.
The street could be closed from 7am until 2pm every Friday.
This solution could be a win for all members of the local community.
For example, the markets would be held on a regular time and day of the week, so customers and sellers would be able to plan around the regular schedule.
An issue was raised about the current location of the markets in Littleton Gardens where customers were ruining the grass.
If the markets were moved to Church St then the grass wouldn’t be walked on by customers (like in Littleton Gardens), there would be plenty of parking near Club Bega for both sellers and customers, and the regularity of the markets would bring regular customers to Bega which would only benefit the local shops.
This would create a sense of community for locals and benefit the whole community.
Could I suggest that this idea be a test or “pilot” to see how this suggestion would work for a period of 3-6 months and then an evaluation be undertaken after that time.
