Apart from the satisfaction experienced from helping others, volunteering is also a way of learning and gaining new skills and developing new friendships.
Senior nurse manager for Bombala and Delegate MPS Rhonda Stewart said the Bombala MPS hoped to recruit a significant number of volunteers for the program, who would be provided with initial training and ongoing support to give volunteers confidence and ensure the safety of patients.
“The aim of the program is to improve the overall MPS experience for people when they are admitted with dementia or other memory problems,” Ms Stewart said.
“The volunteer program will provide one-on-one support aimed at assisting patients experiencing dementia or confusion to feel more relaxed and comfortable.
“In addition, volunteers provide assistance to patients who require help with eating and drinking.
“Our staff are enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with volunteers.
“They value the support given to patients as well as recognising the value of volunteers in complementing patient care.
“Volunteers are expected to participate in the program for a few hours each week, with flexibility about specific times and days,” she said.
Those interested in taking part in the volunteer program are encouraged to contact Cynthia Dolan at the Bombala Multi-Purpose Service on 6458 5777 for further information and an application package.
Applications for volunteers close on Friday, May 15.
