BVSC general manager Leanne Barnes said she had lodged an emergency declaration with the Minister for Police and Emergency Services.
“A natural disaster declaration would pave the way for assistance in paying for repairs to unsealed roads where run off has caused gravel gouging, blocked drains and landslides,” she said.
''We will have to address this, along with damage to bridges, crossings and some of our recreation assets.
“Disaster funding assistance is triggered after costs reach $500,000 and the cost of remediation in the shire is expected to be in the order of $2.5million to $3million.
“Some roads are still closed as a result of the deluge, and our priority right now is to make our assets safe and have all services running as normal as possible.
“Costs will be incurred in returning our assets to normal, but it’s a relief to begin this process knowing that no major incidents or injuries were recorded.
“I acknowledge the hard work done by a whole range of organisations, including council's staff, in responding to the weekend’s floods.
“Residents should be aware of continued wet conditions and a high water table which could easily lead to further road closures,” Ms Barnes said.
Notice of any future road closures will be posted via a live Facebook feed on the council’s website (click here), or directly on the BVSC Facebook page (click here).
