As the community waits to hear whether Maurice Van Ryn has his bail revoked in a Sydney District Court, the BDN discovered one of his admitted crimes was committed while on bail for a previous child abuse matter.
In June 2014, Van Ryn was arrested and charged over an act of indecency with a child under 16.
It is believed to have been this matter that prompted other victims to come forward with their stories of abuse that goes back at least 10 years.
He was released on bail.
However, investigations by the BDN show he committed a further offence – an assault with act of indecency - in July this year.
A spokesperson for the NSW Department of Justice said while Maurice Van Ryn did not breach any imposed bail conditions, he did commit a further offence while on bail.
This further offence is among those he has since pleaded guilty to and is awaiting sentence.
The community was outraged when the Bega Local Court magistrate continued existing bail conditions despite Van Ryn’s guilty plea last Tuesday.
The decision prompted NSW Attorney General Brad Hazzard to call for an urgent review of the case by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The DPP appealed the bail decision with the matter scheduled to be heard in the Sydney District Court on Thursday morning.
