The Bega District News is excited to announce the start of its first Toy Drive for children and families in need this holiday season.
We all know there are many families and parents doing it tough in this region.
We also know how warm, caring and generous the Bega Valley can be when called upon.
From now until December 20, we are calling on readers, local businesses and the wider community to help us help those less fortunate by donating toys to our BDN Christmas Toy Drive.
We have been joined in this effort by the Bega Lions Club, Bega Rotary and the Sapphire Coast Ulysses Club.
“We are very grateful to these local organisations for their interest and willingness to get behind our first toy drive,” BDN editor Ben Smyth said.
“We are also grateful to the local branches of the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul, as well as the Bega District Hospital, who will be handling the distribution of the toys to local children.
“It seems everyone involved is just as excited as we are about what can be achieved by this campaign.”
To be a part of this great campaign, purchase and place an unwrapped gift under the Christmas tree in the BDN offices – on the corner of Carp and Gipps St, Bega.
“Ideally we would like toys or gifts suitable for children from toddlers through to 15-year-olds, boys and girls,” Mr Smyth said.
“Think soft toys and dolls, books and craft supplies, footballs and fishing rods.
“Don’t wrap them, just place them under our Christmas tree and on December 20 they will collected by Vinnies, the Salvos and the Bega Hospital to be distributed to kids in time for Christmas.
“The Sapphire Coast Ulysses Club riders are holding their own annual toy run on December 13 so please give generously to them as well – because once they arrive in Littleton Gardens for lunch, they have offered to place all the toys they collect on their ride on the pile under our office Christmas tree as well!”
