“It’s all completed, except for some tidying up around the edges and then it will be ready for action,” committee member Aimee White said.
“It should open by Wednesday afternoon - once the gates are off it will be open.”
The skate park has been a long time coming, with the first mentions of the idea going back 18 years (BDN, 9/5).
Ms White said the children of the town are “all beside themselves” knowing that it will be open soon - in fact she thought some of the older kids had been so keen to have a go they had jumped the fence for a look already!
She said while it had been a long journey at first, all the volunteers who assisted with the project made it go quickly.
“We’ve had so many helpers,” Ms White said.
“There has been very generous volunteer and free work done, and we are very grateful to the local community.
“Pretty much for the last month on Saturdays, people have been volunteering for free.”
She said the project had gone smoothly because there were some “great” people involved who “really knew what they were doing”.
A Grand Opening for the skate park will be held on October 11 from 2pm onwards.
Ms White said a ceremony will be held for it hopefully attended by councillors, and professional skaters will be invited to come and perform tricks for the crowd.
It will have activities, music and be a picnic day, with more details provided in the coming weeks.
The plan for the skate park is it to be open to all skaters, from learners to the experienced.
