Donning the navy and gold school colours, Jasper Bruce, Connor Sten, Tayla and Jack Ventry were in Canberra to represent the school in the Primary Schools Sport Association (PSSA) Small Schools Relay on Thursday, August 7.
The team competed against Catholic schools from across southern NSW and will now have the chance to compete in Sydney later this year.
St Joseph’s Primary School teacher’s assistant Mary Ventry said the students were ecstatic when they found out they would be competing at state level at the end of the year.
“They have been giving up their lunch hours every day to train,” she said.
“It was just such a great opportunity for these small-town kids to run on the AIS track.
“We will now be looking at doing some extra training to get them ready and will also be fundraising to help with transport costs,” she said.
Three of the relay team members set the record when competing in Sydney in 2012 when the school had just 26 students.
Now that the school has 45 students, they will be competing in a different school category and look forward to the challenge.
