About 50 kids turned out for the Bega Roosters-led training session with the aim of developing skills and raising money for the Bega Rec Ground canteen rebuild.
“There was about $500 raised,” organiser Sonya Jessop said.
“We had really good entries despite people being away on holidays.
“The majority were from the [minor league] club, but there were about eight non-playing entrants.”
The day ran to plan and Jessop said it was good to see young players learning new skills.
“The kids were really good and it was well-run.
“NRL development officer Damian Kennedy gave up his time to help us out.
“And Melinda Armstrong organised all the trainers,” she said.
The day, which had the best response from the younger grades, saw kids enjoy some targeted training with seven different drills led by a number of the Roosters’ first grade players.
“Blake Robinson and Adam Blacka led kicking drills,” Jessop said.
“Then Ryan Apps, Matt Blacka, Shaun Bateman and Scott and Todd Ingram led tackling.”
Daryl Parker and Jason Heffernan led a “wrestling” training, while Adrian Day and “Bob J” led agility and footwork sections.
The kids separated in to groups to take on each training exercise and showed plenty of enthusiasm.
Jessop said it was a good opportunity for young players to learn skills off some of the Roosters’ best.
“It was great to see the first graders giving up their time to the kids,” she said.
