Mr Brown took home the award for best renovation and addition under $100,000 from the Southern Region Master Builders Association Awards last week.
Born in Nowra, Mr Brown has worked all around NSW and the ACT throughout his career but attributes many of the skills that he learnt as a carpenter doing his apprenticeship.
“I learnt my apprenticeship as a carpenter with some traditional guys, with them I learnt to make windows and doors from scratch,” he said.
“They taught me what I am good at now and what I won this award for was attention to detail and great finishes.”
The judges at the Master Builders Association said they were extremely impressed with the complex prefabricated structural steel roof over the external living area at Rose Hill.
The steel structure was prefabricated and reconstructed on site, presenting an extremely visual and interesting structure, and was well finished in every aspect.
Mr Brown, 48, won a Master Builders award in 2008 and also had a renovation that he completed on a London terrace house featured in England’s Grand Design magazine.
Mr Brown is a builder who has a creative eye and enjoys a challenge.
“With Rose Hill at first is was a simple extension on a four-year-old house,” he said.
“And then I thought of doing this wing with steel and came back to the client with the drawings.
“He loved the idea and we went ahead with the project.
“I guess I’m the type of builder that really enjoys a challenge like that.”
