FOLLOWING fears of its imminent closure last week, St Joseph’s Primary School is ploughing ahead to celebrate its 125th year of offering a quality educational choice in Bombala.

Despite the ups and down of the past few years, the St Joseph’s school community is proud to announce they are heading into 2013 having met the stipulated enrolment requirements of the Catholic Education Commission.
The parents and staff at St Joseph’s are passionate about, and committed to, ensuring the school remains a viable educational option for the families of the Bombala community.
The single fact that the loss of the school would eliminate a parent’s choice of schooling for their children impacts on our whole community.
A loss such as this would portray Bombala as a far less attractive prospect for any new family who is considering moving to town. Additionally, if families leave town due to lack of choice in education, the domino effect will see local business suffer through a decline in population, which then leads to further job losses.
Mayor Bob Stewart recently commented on the situation.
“It would be a major blow to the community to lose St Joseph’s School and I urge the community as a whole to pull out all stops and do whatever they can to help the school stay open,” Cr Stewart said.
Although St Joseph’s have just secured their enrolments for 2013, strength in numbers is what is needed, to provide a buffer from the constant threat of falling below the line.
St Joseph’s staff and parents are asking local families to consider the school as a real option for their children’s education.
The school’s Principal, Kim Crannis is leading the drive to attract more students.
“I was advised when I came here that the future of the school was in the balance, and I am determined to give everything I have to help this school retain its identity,” Ms Crannis said.
“Now that I have met the parents and the children who are the heart of this school, I know that I cannot offer anything less than my best. I have never known such a vibrant school community and everyone is welcome to join us here at St Joseph’s.”
