However, this time his name came up in lights for his efforts in dressage, not driving.
Exell has just won the first outdoor event for the year in Horst, the Netherlands.
Exell competed at the event last year and made the quick decision to compete in the 2014 round after an event in Brighton was cancelled.
Exell opened a good lead in the heat rounds to qualify first in the team dressage event.
Performing a difficult maneuouvre almost cost him dearly, but he was able to maintain composure and completed the dressage with a solid score.
Despite the error, Exell maintained his lead overnight heading to the marathon stage of the competition.
Unfortunately for Exell’s team the final was run in reverse qualifying order.
The move meant the team would perform last.
The event had 250 competitors and more than 700 horses meaning the track was rough by the time Exell’s team was due to compete.
Exell was able to complete the course six seconds faster than his nearest rival to hold on to top posiition and win the event.
Runner-up position went to the Netherlands’ Theo Timmerman in front of third-place getter Glenn Geerts from Belgium.
The event also included a para-drivers section with competitors including those Exell has coached.
