ACT Comets star batsmen Michael Spaseski has been named as one of the national players to join the event in Bega.
The move comes on the back of Blake Dean’s withdrawal after he was called up to play with the Sydney Thunder squad despite being dropped from the team last week.
Spaseski has a wealth of experience in top level cricket and in a twist of fate, is expected to be named as the Comets player who will be included in the Prime Minister’s XI squad in an announcement today to play England at Manuka next week.
Bega/Angledale A grade captain Dave Allen said it was exciting to make the announcement and was surprised to hear of Spaseski’s selection for the Ministers XI squad.
“We expect he will be named today to play in the Brett Lee skippered team that takes on England next Tuesday,” Allen said on Tuesday.
“The one day encounter is close to being sold out with interest at an all-time high after Australia’s 5-0 Ashes victory.
“He will go from playing at George Griffin in front of maybe 500 to Manuka oval with a crowd of around 13,000,” he said.
Allen said Spaseski would be in training for the match while he is visiting the Far South Coast, which wouldn’t be a problem since Big Bash team-mate Mark Higgs is the coach for the squad.
“To help prepare Spaseski for the English attack on Tuesday, Higgs will have him doing extra training sessions while he id own here,” Allen said.
Allen said Spaseski is a devastating right-handed batsman and couldn’t wait to see his performance in the Twenty20 tomorrow.
“He will be one of the headline acts on Friday, he is the ACT’s leading run scorer in both grade cricket and the Future’s League competition.
Allen said Spaseski would also be joining Higgs during his Monarch training clinics which are running this week (see story below).
The two squads in the Big Bash have been described as “heavy hitting” and will provide the coast’s best display of batting and bowling tomorrow night.
Allen said Spaseski would also join Higgs and fellow Comets player Vele Dukoski at an informal gathering tonight at Club Bega.
“Tonight, before tomorrow’s big game we will be having an informal gathering where Mark and the Comets players will be our guest speakers.
“The night will start at 7pm and everyone is welcome to attend,” Allen said.
