In overcast conditions, the surf boat crews paddled out to the starting line, which was adjacent to the Tathra Wharf.
Competitors will row from Tathra to Pambula Beach on Friday.
The event drew plenty of supporters from Bega Valley residents and as far away as Melbourne and Wollongong.
Friday marks the sixth and penultimate day of the 2013/14 Navy George Bass Surf Marathon.
There was an excited buzz on the beach as Navy representative Commander Rod Harrod announced the start of each race.
After the crews had departed, Commander Harrod said conditions were ideal for competitors.
The water temperature is expected to reach 18 to 20C, while a nor-easter wind will prove “helpful” for all involved.
The George Bass Surf Marathon concludes on Saturday, with a third change made to the schedule.
Instead of rowing from Pambula to Eden, the crews will progress in the reverse direction.
Participants will be aided by a nor-easter on their final leg from Eden to Pambula.
