PRAISE could not be higher for the Old Time Spring Ball held in Cathcart on Saturday night in memory of well loved local, Jenny Ford.
"What a fantastic family night", "wonderful fun", "Jen would have been so proud and pleased"; these were just some of the comments to be heard ringing around the historic Cathcart Hall on the night and well into Sunday morning as the last of the huge crowd wondered wearily home.
The lateness of the night would also have tickled Jen's fancy as she did love a party and was never happier than when she could be with family and friends having a great time.
Jen would never have imagined just how well loved and respected she was, but the substantially larger than 200 strong crowd of adults and children who turned up in their glad rags to honour her memory and raise funds for her causes just proved what all of us who loved her knew.
While there were many contenders out in their finery, the Belle of the Ball was Ashley Henderson, the Beau was Luke Simpson, the Junior Belle and Beau were Mistin Kidman and Reagan Hurley, while the Best Dressed Couple were David Murphy and Nicole Hobbs.
All of these winners were ably judged by Kristy Ford, Ruth Ford and Alice Shannon, and we thank these lovely ladies.
Jenny’s sons, John and Tige Ford drew the raffles of the gardening and cooking hampers, with these two activities being Jenny's great love.
But the ball was not just a night of great fun, food and company, it also served a very serious purpose and that was of course to raise much needed funds for cancer research and the Southern Monaro Community Fund, and raise some serious money it did.
Whilst it is still a little early to tell, it looks like somewhere in the region of over $7000 was raised from door takings, extremely generous donations, raffles and the auction of the Canberra Raiders Jersey.
This does not include of course the sales of Jen's Cookbook which have been extremely strong. There are still copies available, and if you would like one please contact Kristy Ford on 6458 2155 to secure yours.
There are so many people to thank for the wonderful success of the fantastic event, from the committee who worked so rapidly and hard to make the ball happen so quickly, to the amazing talented and generous band Hodakary Connection, all those who donated and helped in any way, and the whole of the Bombala and district community and beyond who turn out in such impressive numbers to make this ball the outstanding success that it was.
There should of course be special mention made of the Cathcart community who as usual made everyone feel so welcome and provided the ideal venue for this unique event; all please accept this as heartfelt, personal thanks.
It would seem that the Old Time Spring Ball is indeed destined to be an annual event, with many already looking forward to next year’s.
Jen would be pleased and proud of the community she lived in all her life and loved so dearly, and her legacy will forever live on.
