The long-awaited facility adjacent to Narira Oval has already been broken in, with plenty of children heading down after school this week with their boards and scooters, but it will be officially opened with a day of activities tomorrow.
Member for Bega Andrew Constance and Bega Valley Shire Mayor Tony Allen will attend, and there will be a barbecue, stalls with skateboarding gear, demonstrations and a live band of former Cobargo locals.
Demonstrations start from around 10am with the official opening at noon.
Skate park vice-president and project manager Dave Rugendyke said it had been eight years since the original committee was formed, so he was elated to see the facility finished and in use.
“It really is wonderful to see young people already getting such enjoyment out of it,” Mr Rugendyke said.
“There was such a need for it – a common complaint in rural towns is that there is nothing for kids to do.
“All of the feedback we’ve had from the community so far has been positive.”
Mr Rugendyke said the skate park had been made possible by the dedication and support of locals as well as the financial support of Bega Valley Shire Council and NSW Department of Sport and Recreation.
It was designed by Bega skateboard shop owner Fineas Askew and decorated by local Cobargo artist Suzy McKinnon.
The committee is now discussing stage two of the development - a BMX track nearby.
