The boy was walking along the Bermagui Rd just east of Cobargo, between 4-5am, when the accident occurred in thick fog.
The driver did not stop and has not yet been identified by police.
A passer-by alerted Cobargo Police Senior Constable Andrew Burden just after 5am, and police and ambulance personnel attended, but nothing could be done to save the boy, who died on the scene.
Senior Constable Burden said the impact had been “very serious”.
A crime scene was established and examined by detectives and forensic officers throughout Sunday.
The family at this time have requested police not release his name, but he was much-loved part of the community from a well-respected family and known for his feats on the field with the Cobargo Eels Rugby League Club.
The victim had reportedly spent the night at a party in Coolagolite and was walking home, after being given a ride part of the way.
Anybody who was on the Bermagui-Cobargo Rd between 3.30am and 5am on Sunday morning, or has any information about the incident, should contact Bega Police detective Kevin Coady on 6492 9999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
