Under 16s and under 18s competitors struggled to find any big waves with a few curling two-footers out the back of sets, while milder conditions closer to shore were idyllic for the 'mini-groms' junior surfers.
Organisers said the Christmas meet was a bit of a novelty get together with a few fun events to round out the year including the junior development sessions as well as a team event based on where surfers from the area grew up, emerging as a bit of a 'Beach of Origin' contest.
Previous state competitor Arabella Tarpey shared her skills on the board with the juniors, showing them the ropes and how to get to grips with the board in the water and 'popping up' on some of their first waves.
Parents got involved too, helping to oversee the little ones with a few familiar with the surf, while others were jumping on the deck for their very first wave rides.
There were strong numbers for the afternoon with a field of about 40 juniors hitting the waves, 20 mini-groms and other juniors dubbed 'frothers' also getting familiar in the water along with a packed gallery of parents and friends, enjoying the beach for the afternoon despite the cool and cloudy conditions on offer.
The youngsters got a treat when a jet-skiing Santa blitzed ashore to share a bit of Christmas cheer.
Organisers were thrilled with the turnout on the afternoon and were also stoked to have a better PA system on hand as well as a large club banner adorning the club tent to showcase their sponsors and supporters.
