On Monday, November 22, Dr Michael Holland was in the process of informing his colleagues and clients of his resignation effective from mid-February next year.
Australian Community Media viewed his resignation letter which stated his "relationship with NSW Health has become untenable".
For the past 19-years, Dr Holland has provided obstetric and gynaecological services to women of the Eurobodalla Shire and as far north as Milton-Ulladulla and to Eden in the south.
"My service to the women and families of the South Coast has been the most rewarding period of my long career," his letter read.
"I appreciate the difficulty that this action will cause to our patients and regret that it has reached this point.
"NSW Health, as a department of the NSW Government must now take responsibility to provide this service which has been highly valued and respected by the community of the South Coast.
For years, the Moruya surgeon has lobbied the government to upgrade critical care hospital services in the Eurobodalla Shire and has fought for a regional hospital.
Most recently, at the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into rural health, Dr Holland provided a testimony on the shire's "unsafe" neonatal services.
Dr Holland was unsure what the future may hold for his professional career from February next year.
He referred women from the Milton-Ulladulla region to Nowra and women from the Bega region to the South East Regional Hospital at Bega.
"Women from the Eurobodalla should be referred to the Director of Medical Services at Moruya District Hospital," he said.
"I will attempt to make the transition as smooth as possible and will be working with the District Lead in Obstetrics to reach a solution.
"Maternity services will continue to be provided in Moruya District Hospital by the team of midwives and GP obstetricians supported by locum specialists until a permanent solution is resolved."
Dr Holland reminds the community of the importance of level 4 services at the new regional hospital. He calls on the community to attend a public assembly this Saturday, November 27.
The community will meet at Moruya Riverside Park rotunda at 10.30am. For more information visit the ONE - One New Eurobodalla Hospital Facebook group.
