During the Black Summer fires, the clubhouse had been used as a place of refuge for residents and holiday-makers when they couldn't access nearby evacuation centres or felt unsafe in their homes.

The bushfire suppression system project has seen a 105,000-litre water tank installed as well as a protective sprinkler system around the building.

Pambula SLSC secretary Kerry Bourke said the goal was to further "enhance the facility so that it can serve its purpose", in creating a safe place of refuge and improve its capacity to respond in the event of future natural disaster situations.

"I think it's an asset to the community of Pambula Beach and surrounds, especially since the surf club is part of the designated neighbourhood safer place," Mr Bourke said.

"The project ensures Pambula SLSC will become a more viable and safer place for our community and will provide an added layer of protection, and assurance to those evacuated and needing shelter and assistance."

At the helm of this project was Pambula SLSC vice-president and life member Andrew Holt, who recently received his 25 year National Patrol Service Award.

Mr Bourke said that over the last six months Mr Holt had been the project manager, spending a lot of time working with the local tradesmen involved.

"Andrew Holt has been tirelessly volunteering his time to get the project completed," Mr Bourke said.

Mr Bourke said the PSLC worked with the Bega Valley Shire Council, the Rural Fire Service, the Pambula Beach Bushfire Protection Committee and other locals on the project.

The installation of the bushfire suppression system was made possible from funding provided by the NSW government in the Bushfire Recovery Grants.

"We were lucky enough that under the Bushfire Recovery Grant system, we were given the funds to support us in this project," Mr Bourke said.
