Both the SES and Bureau of Meteorology are reporting that rainfall has eased throughout the Bega River catchment.

The Bega River at Bega North peaked at 5.87 metres around 11:00 am Wednesday 12 May and at the time of the alert around 12.30pm was at 5.86 metres and falling, with minor flooding.

However, based on advice from the Bureau, the SES alert warns they were still expecting potential flood water impact to roads and low lying areas in Angledale, North Bega and Bega, Jellat Jellat, Kalaru, Rocky Hall, Tarraganda, and Tanja.

Other local roads in low lying areas may also be impacted, the report said.

After earlier remaining open, the Bega-Tathra road at Jellat has been closed with the height of flood waters inundating the road.

The SES are encouraging farmers and rural property owners to keep an eye on the river and "be ready to move pumps, other equipment and livestock away from rising waters downstream of Bega."

Motorists are also warned not to drive through flood waters as they may have washed away road surfaces and could be deeper or faster-flowing than they appear.
