Bega Valley Shire Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said there had been landslides on the mountain for 30 years and he believes it was just going to keep on happening.
When asked what long-term solution the council might consider to keep the road open and safe, Cr Fitzpatrick said an alternate route or alternate reconstruction of the road would be the way.

Cr Fitzpatrick said it would be good if state and federal government work together to make Brown Mountain a significant route and put together the funding to reconstruct or build an alternate route.
"At the present time, most of our industries and tourism sector is now reliant out of Canberra and Victoria so we really need Brown Mountain to be fixed," Cr Fitzpatrick said.
The mayor highlighted some examples of tunnels under the Sydney Harbour, under buildings in Sydney and through the Snowy Hydro scheme, as well as building bridges that have been possible with the machinery and mechanics the country has.
Surely we can look at Brown Mountain and say there's an alternate route there, especially with today's machinery and engineering.

The local community needs permanent access on the road for emergency services, freight travel, tourism and for our main industries Cr Fitzpatrick said.
"We should be looking for an alternate route that guarantees those freight movements and also transport movements for residents on a permanent basis irrespective of rain," Cr Fitzpatrick said.

Issues for freight carriers down Brown Mountain
Not only are closures of Brown Mountain a significant issue for residents and tourism, but freight access was another big problem Cr Fitzpatrick said.
The mountain only offers single trailer access in comparison to major highways like the Hume which allows access for B-doubles.
Currently an alternate route via Imlay Road was possible for freight carriers with B-doubles. However, Cr Fitzpatrick said this route takes you right out of the shire and adds an extra hour to the trip.
In the meantime freight carriers carrying more than one trailer have to unhook and re-hook trailers, carrying them individually up the mountain.
"It is over an hour's work just to get the couple of trailers over a 12km stretch of road," Cr Fitzpatrick said.
Council is unsure at this stage when Brown Mountain will be re-opened, but guessed it could be open for Saturday or late Sunday morning.
"If it takes an extra day for it to be secure for the long weekend then that's great," Cr Fitzpatrick said.
