CWA of NSW chief executive officer Danica Leys and her executive assistant Jackie Camiller visited Bega to check out the location for the big conference taking place in May 2021.
President of the local CWA conference organising committee Helen Galton OAM hosted Ms Leys and Ms Camiller.
A top priority was meeting Charlie Bell and Peter Coulton of the Bega Showground management team. Danica and Jackie spent several hours at the Bega Showground confirming where all aspects of the CWA conference would be located.
Ms Leys then met John McVeity, a local sound expert, at the showground to discuss the conference sound requirements. Another local, John Carter, also discussed building and supplying a temporary stage for CWA members in the main pavilion.
The State CWA Conference will include many displays by focus areas such as cookery, handicraft, international, agricultural and environmental, cultural and social issues, publicity and advocacy. In addition to the Bega Showground, the CWA Conference will also utilise several Bega churches and halls.
Ms Leys and Ms Camiller took the opportunity to view the Seventh Day Adventist Church and hall, the Resonate Church and hall, and the Uniting Church.
Another highlight of their visit to Bega was a meeting at Bega Valley Shire Council with the new mayor, Russell Fitzpatrick. The mayor was delighted to meet Ms Leys and Ms Camiller, and he is looking forward to welcoming CWA members to Bega for their conference next year.
During her visit, Danica met with Bega accommodation managers, Justin and Raelene of Bega Village Motor Inn, and Louise of Bega Downs Motor Inn, to view their rooms. The CWA anticipates hundreds of members from throughout NSW and ACT will need accommodation in Bega and the local region for the weeklong conference.
Danica and Jackie also met with the local CWA organising committee to discuss progress. At this meeting Nelleke Gorton of Bega CWA organised a delicious selection of nibbles, to showcase local produce.
Topics discussed at this meeting included local market stalls, finance, the bush dance, lunch and dinner caterers, raffle tickets, sponsorship, cleaning and volunteers.
Ms Leys and Ms Camiller returned to Sydney impressed with the excellent planning progress being made for the 2021 event.
