But not only is the community one of four finalists in the award's Australia Connecting Communities Award, the Cobargo Showground Land Manager is also a finalist in the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Crown Land Manager Excellence Award.

"Becoming a finalist is a validation of what a strong and wonderful community we have here in Cobargo and the district," one of the nominators for the Cobargo community Chris Walters said.

"The kindness of so many people has come to the fore since the [bushfire] disaster; it's humbling how kind people have been to each other."

She said it was unusual for an entire community to become a finalist for an award, but thought those running the awards were aware of the importance of recognising everyone.

"Because this has been a community effort; and it has needed to be," she said.

"There have been so many things going on in so many places, I expect Cobargo is one of many which have pulled together.

"I think Australians have some special spirit that means we help each other in times of trouble."

While there have been many initiatives and volunteers helping the Cobargo region recover, Ms Walters said an "enormous step" when it came to bringing to the community together was when the Cobargo Showground opened as a refuge during the summer bushfires.

The Cobargo's post office and co-op were gathering points after the fires, the Cobargo Bushfire Relief Centre opened - which Ms Walters coordinates with Danielle Murphy - and the Cobargo Community Bushfire Recovery Fund was set up to help community projects.

Then there was the hay fund to bring food to local animals, the Cobargo Quaama Business Recovery Group to assist businesses and help rebuild the town, as well as groups focusing on wellness, bringing plant life back to Cobargo and more.

"There are so many groups of people, but also individuals helping individuals," Ms Walters said.

"One of the strengths of Cobargo is it is so diverse. The diversity has played a really big part in how the community has been able to pull together."

The award winners will be announced on November 20.
