Yellow flowers and crowds of friends and loved ones lined the highway on Monday morning as the community farewelled dairy farmer Michael Shipton in an unusual, but poignant, funeral.

With COVID-19 preventing large crowds from attending the funeral service, Mr Shipton's family and close friends shared details of the journey they would be taking from his property at Kanoona through to Cobargo cemetery, so that a "guard of honour" could take part.
Around 40-50 people stood at the roadside near the Bega Bridge to acknowledge the passing, while similar groups also paid their respects at various safe points on the route.
The funeral was arranged through John Whyman Funeral Services and the service at Cobargo was presided over by Dick Buesnel, of Tathra, who himself was a dairy farmer and livestock officer with the DPI.
Bunches of yellow flowers were organised by family friends to distribute to all those lining the roadways to show their love and support for Michael and his family.
Mr Shipton was known as one of Australia's top dairy farmers and died after a tragically short battle with cancer. He is survived by wife Ancret and three young children.
