Dangerous seas kept most off the water, but officials said the weather was improving rapidly and game anglers will be out again in the search for yellowing and bluefin tuna.

The MBGLAC and Merimbula Tackleworld winter junior fishing competition has now come to a close. All entries earned an icy-pole, while 10 winners secure a $40 Tackleworld voucher. Congratulations to Harrison Brunner in the under 11 age group and Rali Badullovich in the under 16s who both won double prizes. Also siblings Jayda and Sunny Hulme who each took out a prize. Congratulations also for Jack Byard and Shelby Edwards who are our other under 11 prize winners. The Club thanks Ron, Gael, Stuart and Geoff at Tackleworld for their help and support with brag mats and icy poles, plus advice and help to all of the parents and guardians who took their children fishing during the school holidays. A thank you also to Trent Alexander and Stephen Thurston from DPI for their support, assistance and promotional materials provided.

In the Merimbula front lake the run-in from the sea remains good for trevally and bream over the shallows. There are lots of "chopper" tailor in the Merimbula Back Lake plus some great bream and occasional trevally.

Members expect snapper and morwong will be active again off our local reefs at Long Point, Haycock and Horshoe. Flathead are patchy but remain a staple with catches reported all along the coast from the Horsehoe Reef area to north of Tathra. Unfortunately clouds of chinamen leatherjackets are still around.

Take care crossing the Merimbula Bar. Make sure you are wearing your life jacket.

Reports from the Bega River, which was opened last week include some beautiful blue lipped bream after dark from the launching ramp at Mogareeka. Prawn baits are the way to go.

Bream are also about the "wall' area just upstream. At Pambula the water is a little dirty after the rain but bream and tailor remain on the bite.

Estuary perch are really on the chew in the Bega River and at Pambula, but must be released with a spawning closure until August 31. Australian salmon can be taken in the lower Pambula River and near Bar Beach at Merimbula. Salmon are also travelling our local beaches, try Tura North and Haycock.
