Originally scheduled for winter, it has been delayed to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but entries have already begun to be received.
Exhibition team member Claudia Tasche said this year's major disasters for the region, bushfires and coronavirus, could be impacting on artists in different ways.
"It could spark creativity, as a way to cope with what happened; to find art as an outlet for what they feel and what they went through," she said.
But she said of course others would be focused on more basic needs, like finding proper accommodation or enough feed for their animals.
This is the first year students all over Australia specifically are being asked to submit entries for the youth category, although Ms Tasche said the exhibition is already open to a wide field of participants - last year it even had artworks from overseas.
Ms Tasche was unsure if they would be able to have a "real" exhibition opening due to the pandemic's health restrictions limiting numbers of people inside a confined space, but said "we try to go ahead as best we can".
Entries must be postcard size, A6 (10.5cm x 14.8cm), while 3D postcards should have an A6 postcard-sized base and are limited to 5cm in height.
Quirky entries are encouraged this year for the special category Australian Icons, where you can create an artwork of what you regard to be "typical Australian".

The exhibition runs September 11-30.
