Solar farm developer and Nimmitabel scrap metal dealer Andrew Thaler says he is a likely contender for Eden-Monaro once candidates are called.
Mr Thaler has stood as an independent on several previous occasions and said on Friday he "may have to break a promise to my wife" by stepping forward again.
"I can't just sit by," he said.
While a date for the Eden-Monaro byelection is yet to be called, meaning candidates are not yet confirmed through the Australian Electoral Commission, Mr Thaler said it's more than likely he will be included on the ballot paper.
"My big message is that if an electorate wants to be smart, chuck in an independent for a term or two - especially if the government really wants that seat to make up its numbers," Mr Thaler said.
"Then they'll fight over it for a few years and the electorate benefits."
