Game anglers have reported tag and release of striped marlin and now anxiously await the arrival of yellowfin tuna into our local waters off Kianinny, Merimbula and Eden.
The Bega Valley Shire Council reports that piling works for the Quarantine Bay floating pontoon upgrade at Eden kicked off during the week and the new pontoon sections will be installed in approximately four weeks.
The long awaited pontoon beside the ramp will allow ready use of the ramp for those unable to use drive off/on launching methods.
As per past weeks the bar at Merimbula is very shallow and Marine Rescue Merimbula remains restricted to heading out over the bar to three hours before high tide and two hours after.
Chinamen leatherjackets have become a serious pest along our popular ocean flathead spots off Kianinny, Turingal Head, Bournda Island, Tura Headland and Short Point and Haycock.
Try wire leaders. With braid above you can fish without swivels which Chinamen target.
Snapper and morwong are reported from local reefs such as White Rock, Long Point, Haycock, Lennards and North Head.
Good size gummy shark are about south of Haycock but here Chinamen remain a problem. Try a single bait, weighted to the bottom.
The waters of our estuaries is starting to cool and activity is slowing.
In the Bega River which remains open there are bream, trevally and dusky flathead, best results from soft plastics. Try the change of tide near Mogareeka.
In the Merimbula channel fish from around the bridge, the Marina, and the MBGLAC jetty - abide by distance rules. Best time is low tide with soft plastics, nippers or pilchard baits.
In the Merimbula Top Lake tailor are ever-present as well as dusky flathead, lots of trevally and bream. Reports of jewfish from the deeper holes fishing the full moon at night with live bait.
