Happy with decision
I'm glad the owners got their approval for the building, they changed their plans to try and appeal to the resident behind them.

They would have spent a lot of extra money trying to get something they liked and something to appeal to everyone's rejections.
It's all the same people complaining that were complaining about Woolies coming to town.

Lack of spine
Yes Kristy the architectural dynamic of any town/suburb will inevitably change. But only if a spineless council allows it.
Would you like it next door to you between your home and any view you have?
Roll on the next council elections. You can't keep postponing them forever.

Failure of officials
It is clear from your article that the building, in its entirety, does not comply however the mayor may wish to interpret the "minor variation".
The building may be allowed by the council approving the variation, and at that point I guess the building would be considered "compliant".
However, it is this failure of elected officials to speak the whole truth and nothing but the truth that should be of concern whatever you might consider to be the aesthetic value of the building.
Mr Tobias himself truthfully states the development is not compliant in its entirety. On this point alone the council might have negotiated a better outcome that addressed the concerns of the community in relation to aesthetics, but it seems they have chosen not to.

All or nothing
Even the architect admits that "one little bit" is outside the 10m height restriction. Council says it has no power to reject a development that complies with the restrictions. This does not. Or do we live in a world where one little bit of illegal is now okay? This building is not going to enhance the town, so don't let it slide.

Setting a precedent
I just read about recent approval of a business/residence. Bermagui is a very special place and it seems like a precedent has been set now. Imagine in 10 years...the main street full of extravagant business/residences.
Please don't change the classic seaside townscape. We can all have a say regarding the future development of our town.

Bega fuel rip-off
How can petrol stations in Bega justify their rip-off prices?
I can get fuel at $1.05 in Merimbula and even after dropping prices today from $1.35 to a greedy $1.27 Caltex and Shell are laughing at us all the way to the bank!
At a time when many people are unemployed I think it is pathetic and opportunistic.

Big end of town
Every form of media every day in the current crisis has pictures of growing Centrelink lines. Millions are out of work or taking big pay cuts to survive.
However, in not one form of media do I see CEOs or senior management anywhere in Australia volunteering to take pay cuts or in fact losing their jobs.
Also I haven't seen one of the politicians including the PM and Premier, who keep telling us to suck it up and persevere, volunteering to take a pay cut like ordinary Australians.
Classic example is the NRL where management is taking a 25 per cent cut but those they live off, the players, are being asked to take a 75 per cent pay cut.
