The bar at Merimbula remains very shallow and one should take extreme care crossing in small craft during low tides. Marine Rescue Merimbula is restricted to heading out over the bar to three hours before high tide and two hours after. This has arisen due to a false channel developed past Mitchies Jetty spreading the current flow over a wide area and limiting the normal channel scouring near the navigation buoy.
With the strong currents slowing down reports to hand see good ocean flathead taken off Kianinny, Turingal Head, Bournda Island, Tura Headland and Short Point. Try 15-20 fathoms. Flathead are also available in Merimbula Bay near the artificial reefs and off Haycock Beach at Quondolo at 15 fathoms. Some snapper and morwong are reported from local reefs such as White Rock, Long Point and Haycock.
Australian salmon continue to save the day for land based anglers with good catches from our headlands, beaches and jetties. Try North Tura Beach near Bournda Island where there are also good tailor, at Dolphin Cove, Middle Beach, Haycock Beach as well as Aslings Beach at Eden. Try silver spinners, and ganged hooks and pilchards and Rapala bibbed lures off the jetties.
Swarms of small bream make bait fishing difficult try soft plastics. Best time is change of tide.
In the Merimbula channel fish from around the bridge, the Marina, and the MBGLAC jetty - abide by distance rules. Best time is low tide with soft plastics, nippers or pilchard baits. In the Merimbula Top Lake tailor are ever-present as well as dusky flathead, lots of trevally and bream. There is nothing better than fresh trevally cut extra thin and served sashimi.
