In the aftermath, Channel 9 put a callout for anyone badly affected by the fires to make contact, with the couple and Carol's daughter Elyssa Nelson given a trip to Melbourne to watch the Australian Open.
While there, the family enjoyed the on-court antics of John McEnroe who at one point delivered his famous tirade "You cannot be serious".
If that wasn't enough of a lovely surprise, they were also given a new car thanks to the Open's major sponsor Kia.
