Hopefully conditions will improve and our game-fishing anglers achieve their goals in Eden's Open Tournament this coming weekend.

The bar at Merimbula remains shallow and with offshore swells predicted to top above six metres it is foolhardy to attempt crossing in small craft.

With the swell coming from the ENE probably not much better at Pambula. So if it is necessary to fish offshore try Quarantine Bay at Eden or Kianinny at Tathra.

Without doubt during these periods of inclement weather our estuaries are the place to be.

However, the club urges all anglers to be cautious of the conditions with the recent rainfall causing significant flooding in some river systems.

Even in local lakes and estuaries rain runoff has been quick, but has also carried debris from the bushfires with stones, mud and sticks. River systems should have a wonderful clean out, but it will take time for the run off to clear.

In regular fishing news, the club congratulates the angler/s who captured and released in great condition metre-plus jewfish last Saturday at Mogareeka.

Assuming one is not savaged by tailor, dusky flathead and good bream are also available at Mogareeka. There are also flounder and good whiting in the shallows for those fishing with worms.

At Twofold Bay slimy mackerel baitfish are being swarmed by small cuta and are hard to catch.

Some good flathead are reported near the signal tower and morwong and snapper remain plentiful off the reefs around from Snug Cove.

Trevally and bream remain on the chew all along the Merimbula channel down from the bridge and in the Pambula channel near the Shark Hole. Best time is low tide with both soft plastics or pilchard baits.

Calamari squid frequent the Merimbula Wharf morning and evening. Best results from prawn-like slow sinking jigs. Luderick can be patchy but some good catches are reported in the evenings using artificial lures.

Some good Australian salmon have been taken with silver spinners.

On Friday, February 14, the club will be open from 6.30pm. Visitors are welcome, come one and all and enjoy the ambience, fishing report, friendship and lovely views with very competitive bar prices.
