BOM defines a heatwave as three or more days in a row when daytime and night-time temperatures are unusually high, in relation to the local long-term climate and the recent past.
Severe heatwaves are not as frequent as low-intensity heatwaves and are challenging for vulnerable people such as the elderly and particularly those with pre-existing medical conditions.
BOM stated 2019's spring was the driest as well as the fifth-warmest on record for Australia.
