Costa and Dan Bakker were there to help plant fruit trees, berries, grapes, vegetables and establish a worm farm in the school's newly constructed orchard area.
Quaama PS submitted the below report on the visit.
The P&C over the last three years has fundraised and sought grants to enable the construction of an enclosed orchard area measuring 22m long x 11m wide and 4m high. This has been a huge undertaking and quite a visionary project.
Future generations of students and their families will have the wonderful opportunity of producing and eating fruit, vegetables and berries grown at school.
The learning opportunities cross many curriculum areas in what will be highly motivational activities, which will propel the school's vision of a "Sustainable School, Sustainable Future".
Our pupils had delightful interactions with Costa whose message of ensuring we positively engage with all people, follow an interest with passion and leave a legacy in life, was embraced by all in attendance.
Pupils in their buddy pairings researched the fruit tree they were to plant on the day and produced a PowerPoint which was shown to Costa. Congratulations to our school captains, Faith, Isabella and vice-captain Sienna for greeting Costa and Dan and hosting the day. Thanks and well done!
The school community came out in force to help our pupils with the plantings for which we are most grateful. We hope to extend an invitation to our community to remain closely involved in the development and operations of the orchard in future years.
Without the support of the families and friends of Quaama Public School through working bees, volunteered time and labour to plan and oversee the project, grants from local businesses, donated materials such as soil and manure, the ambitious venture would have remained a great idea.
We are very proud of our new structure and indeed of smaller developments around the school this year.
The school has experienced many upgrades this year with the fabulous upgrade to our road front thanks to Bega Valley Shire Council. We now have a much needed footpath and stairs to allow safe access into the school and a beautiful retaining wall with future planned landscaping to further enhance the appearance of the front of the school.
The gardens around the school are looking terrific with many new plantings and new layer of mulch.
