The Eagles were pushed by the Merimbula Knights on Saturday at Merimbula's Berrambool Oval when the tail end provided stiff resistance after Tathra had knocked over the top order cheaply.
"Let's go here boys, six for 70," came the cry from the outfield as the Eagles looked to take control in the opening innings.
However, Merimbula's final four batsmen clung to the crease with grit and determination as the Knights built to a commendable run chase of 9/161.
When Mitch Jessop and Patrick Whittard had both gone for ducks off clean catches by the Tathra fielders, the Eagles were confident of a quick close to Merimbula's innings.
But John Aldridge hunkered down at the crease and built to a team-best of 41 with decent contributions from Mikael Hulme with 30 and Zac Harlow on 14 not-out.
"It turned into a really good game," Tathra captain Chris Dwyer said, "they ended up with 161".
Jayden Heyhorn and David Shane commanded the bowling attack for Tathra, picking up three wickets apiece, while medium pacer Pete Bennett cleaned up two neat wickets.
And while the Eagles dropped just four wickets in the chase, they pulled off the result with little more than four overs in hand.
Bennett opened well to knock 36 runs before he was dismissed by the bowling of Hulme.
However, Dwyer said he was keenly impressed by the efforts of Tathra young guns like Tynan Taylor, who plugged 41 not-out to lead the chase.
Quinn Fletcher-Barrie and Shane Grass scored 25 and 20 respectively before catches returned them to the sheds.
With a contribution of 24 not-out by Dwyer, the Eagles secured the win with 4/164 and now take outright lead on the competition.
Meanwhile, the Bulls continued their good run of form to make quick work of Bermagui at Dickinson Oval on Saturday.
Casey Jack had a team best of 25 runs for Bermagui as the club fumbled to finish all-out on 106 runs.
The Bulls made quick work of the reply as the openers ran down the chase convincingly.
With 20 overs in hand, the Bulls rounded the target with Rob Stevenson hitting a neat 50, while Brad Moon fell just one shy of the half-ton on 49 when the Bulls reached the winning marker.
Meanwhile, Wolumla were handed a defeat by Pambula by a single run 231 to 232 as Wolumla ran out of overs.
