The renovation is a joint project between Tathra Lions Club and the Tathra Sunshine Club Boardriders. Most of the physical work has been carried out by the Boardriders under the planning and direction of president Craig Waugh of Tathra Gardenscape, while the Lions provided the project finance - and the occasional post-work barbecue and refreshment!
The memorial was first established in 1965 and was erected to honour the memory of those who served in the armed forces during world conflicts of last century.
It was first upgraded by the Tathra Lions Club in 1986, but as the size of crowds grew, on Anzac Days in particular, Ian Stafford and Craig Waugh saw the need to enlarge the area of the memorial, especially so seating could be safely and adequately provided for those who can no longer stand throughout ceremonies.
The Tathra Lions and Boardriders jumped on board, and now a terrific asset stands as testament to those who served, and also to this partnership of two community minded groups.
Allen Collins from the Bega RSL sub-branch said he was in awe of the efforts by the Lions and Boardriders and offered the sub-branch's sincere thanks.
"The new monument is twice the size and the area surrounding has been re-turfed. When I arrived in Tathra some 21 years ago, attendance at both Anzac and Remembrance Day was poor, to say the least. But each year the attendance has grown to such numbers that a new area was needed.
"It is wonderful to live in a place like Tathra where all pull together. Many many thanks."
The new-look memorial will be put to first use on Monday, November 11, with a service from 10.20am.
In case of bad weather, this year's Remembrance Day service will shift to St Martin's by the Sea.
